Tech giant Facebook is facing a barrage of criticism after a post posted on its official Facebook page revealed a secret project to create a nuclear weapon.
A new “weapon of mass destruction” is now being designed and tested at Facebook, and the technology company is working with scientists and experts to make it a reality, Facebook said in a statement.
The project has been a secret since January, when it was revealed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden that the U.S. was developing a nuclear device that could strike the Earth.
The post revealed a nuclear bomb, but was deleted by Facebook on Tuesday.
“I can’t say anything more because it’s still classified, but this is something that we’re working on,” Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos said Tuesday during an earnings call.
“It’s a secret that we can’t talk about.”
The post by former Facebook security engineer Adam Mosseri was a bombshell.
He disclosed that Facebook was secretly working on a weapon that could destroy the planet, and that he and other Facebook employees were working on it.
A series of videos and images from the project were released online on March 4.
The new weapons are being built by the Advanced Threat Operations Center, a secretive organization with a secret mission.
Stamos declined to say how many employees are working on the project, but he said he is confident it will be completed in the next year.
The video in which Mosseri revealed the new weapons was a “bombshell” to many in the tech world, including Facebook.
“It’s really been a bombshell,” Stamos told reporters.
“The technology is in a very early stage and I don’t know if people understand it.
We are building a weapon of mass death.
I mean, it’s not even that far-fetched.
I can’t think of a scenario where we wouldn’t want to do that.”
Facebook said that the Advanced Technology Weapon, or ATW, will be used to make a nuclear warhead with enough mass to destroy the Earth in 30 minutes.
“This weapon would be a massive, catastrophic event that would devastate the Earth, including our infrastructure,” Stamers said.
“And it’s going to be the largest single-event, single-purpose weapon in history.”
He added that the new weapon is being developed by a group of scientists who are working with “a group of experts and experts around the world” to ensure that it’s safe to deploy.
“That means that the entire community of experts working on this, which includes scientists from MIT, from the universities of Pennsylvania, from Stanford and all over the world, and also the government of the United States, and everyone else that we know of, is going to play a critical role in this project,” Stamios said.
In addition to its work on the weapon, Facebook is developing a mobile app that will let users interact with the new device, including taking pictures and videos.
Stamers confirmed that the app will be developed by the company’s new arm of Facebook, which is building a mobile messaging service.
“We’re in the early stages of this and we don’t have all the answers right now,” Stamros said.
But many experts, including former President Jimmy Carter, said the idea that Facebook is working on something that is likely to kill people is crazy.
“What kind of insane notion is that?”
Carter told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday, adding that Facebook should stop making such a statement at this stage of the development.
“I can understand if they want to go ahead and talk about this, but it’s insane.”
Stamos did not respond to requests for comment from CNN.
“There are very good reasons to believe that this is going on, and this is the kind of thing that could happen,” Stamms said.
He also defended Facebook against claims that it is behind the “fake news” scandal.
“Facebook is a private company, so we have a right to protect ourselves, and to do so, we have to be very careful,” he said.
